Right to Development


It is inalienable right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are
entitled to participate, contribute and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development. It describes the full realization of the right of people to self-determination. It was first recognized in 1981 in Article 22 of the African Charter on Human and People's Rights. It was proclaimed by the
UN in 1986. It is both individual and collective.  The right holders are individuals, people and emphasis on women, children and vulnerable groups. The duty bearers are state, international community and all human beings.
Principle of Right to Development :
1. People Centered Development
The human person is the central, subject, participant and beneficiary of development.
2. Right based Approach
Development should be carried out in such a manner in which all human rights and fundamental freedoms are fully recognized.
3. Participation
Active, free and meaningful participation of all individuals and peoples.
4. Non-Discrimination
NO distinction based on sex, religion, language, race
5. Equity
Fair Distribution of the benefits of development.
