Bhim Shamsher

Written by: Sona Roka Magar

Bhim Shumsher JBR was the 14th Prime Minister and 6th Rana  Prime Minister of Nepal. He was born on 16th April 1865 Thapathali Durbar Kathmandu. Before becoming prime minister, he was the heir apparent (with the rank of field marshal) from 1907 to 1929. Bir Shumsher ruled Nepal from 26 November 1929.

Family and Early life

Bhim Shumsher was 6th son of Dhir Shamsher Rana, the youngest brother of  Jung Bahadur Rana. Bhim Shumsher's son, Padma Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, ruled Nepal from 29 November 1945 to 30 April 1948; his other sons held prominent state positions until 1951. Bhim Shumsher joined the Nepalese Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1868. He become a colonel in 1879. Bhim Shamsher was aide-de-camp  to King George V during his visit to Nepal in December 1911, and he was crowned ruler of Nepal on 26 November 1929.Bhim Shumsher became Field Marshal of Nepalese Army on 26 November 1929, Honorary Major General of the British Army on 4 April 1930, Honorary Colonel of the 4th Gorkha Rifles on 4 April 1930, and Honorary General of the Chinese Army on 23 February 1932.

His major achievement and rule

Bhim Shumsher JBR plays an important role in abolishing capital punishment. Bhim Shumsher built several district hospitals, extended the drinking-water pipelines in eastern Nepal, and built public roads and bridges. He was the one who make Saturday as a holiday in Nepal. He introduced fixing working hours from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays, protecting tenant farmers from land-reform, abolishing duties on cotton and salt, ending the pasture tax. Bhim Shumsher upgraded the middle schools of Bhaktapur and Kathmandu's Patan district to high-school standards.
Foreign Relation
Bhim Shumsher was allied with Kuomintang China in the north and the British Raj in India in the south, both of whom had interests in Nepal. He received the Delhi Durbar Medal from Britain in 1911 and the Order of the Sacred Tripod on 23 February 1932 from the Republic of China.
Bhim Shumsher contained the British interests in Nepal to economic support in exchange for Gurkha soldiers for the British Army. He invited William Birdwood, commander-in-chief of the British forces in India, to Kathmandu in 1930. Bhim Shumsher visited Calcutta in 1931 to meet with viceroy Lord Irwin about their relations with Tibet, since the British wanted to develop a trade route with Tibet via Nepal. Relations between Tibet and Nepal were deteriorating, however, and the British wanted to mediate the dispute. After his visit to India, he was honored by Italian and Chinese governments.
The threat of an armed Tibetan-Nepalese conflict arose in the spring of 1930. Relations between Tibet and Nepal had soured since August 1929 because of what Bhim Shumsher saw as Lhasa's maltreatment of S. Gyalpo, a Tibetan-Nepalese who was arrested in the city; Bhim Shumsher's diplomats said that Gyalpo was a Nepalese subject, and the Tibetans disagreed. Gyalpo escaped from custody, and sought shelter at the Nepalese embassy in Lhasa. Tibetan police entered the embassy and took Gyalpo away; the move outraged Bhim Shumsher, who ordered the mobilization of troops in preparation for war against Tibet in February 1930.
Tensions between the countries placed a heavy burden on Tibetan military defense, and Chiang Kai-shek informed the 13th Dalai Lama of his willingness to send troops and officials to assist the Tibetans in their fight against the Nepalese. Although the Dalai Lama tactfully declined what he saw as the entry of Han Chinese troops (and officials) into Tibet, Chiang Kai-shek continued to display goodwill towards the Tibetans by promising to exercise diplomatic pressure on British India and Nepal in the Tibetan-Nepalese dispute.
The head of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission and Chiang Kai-Shek's key deputy, Ma Fuxiang, arranged for a diplomatic initiative with Nepal on behalf of Chiang. Chiang's officials reached Kathmandu via India in September 1930 to meet Bhim Shumsher, who was informed that they came to "offer the services of the Chinese government to settle the dispute." The delegation presented Bhim Shumsher with gifts from Chiang Kai-Shek which included porcelain, ancient Chinese textiles, lacquerware, jade, ivory, and other Chinese artifacts. Bhim Shumsher repudiated the Chinese government's claims of involvement in any issue between Tibet and Nepal, however, and noted that British-led mediation had already helped reach a peaceful settlement. The result suggested to China that Chiang Kai-shek's efforts led to the peaceful resolution between Tibet and Nepal, and he had protected Chinese sovereignty.
Bhim Shumsher continued to develop diplomatic relations with Kuomintang politicians during his rule, and balanced relations with the British Raj in India. He also developed diplomatic relations with Japan and several European powers.

Dev Shamsher

Author: Sona Roka Magar

Dev Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana was the 12th prime minister of Nepal. He was born on 17 July 1862. He was Maharaja of Lamjung and Kaski. In the annals of political history, he is remembered as Nepal's 'most liberal' prime minister, considering he came from the Rana dynasty known for their autocratic rulers who presided over the kingdom from 1846 to 1951. He was prime minister of Nepal for only 114 days in 1901.

Family life

Dev Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana  was the fourth of 17 sons born to the Chief of the Army Dhir Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana (a younger brother of Jung Bahadur Rana) by his third wife, Rani Nanda Kumari, daughter of Kazi Hemdal Singh Thapa (sister of Commanding Colonel Keshar Singh Thapa). Dev Shumsher was adopted at a very young age by his father's childless elder brother, General Krishna Bahadur Kunwar Ranaji and was raised by him and his wife. As the adopted child of general Krishna Bahadur Rana, who was governor of Palpa, Dev Shamsher had a lavish upbringing compared to his natural brothers. Only  festivals and family gathering,  Dev Shumsher can meet his own sibling. The Shumsher were poorer than the Jang and other cousins, so to ease the burden on Dhir Shumsher.Since he was much richer than his brothers, they envied him. He spent the majority of his time in their palace, Thapathali Durbar.
Dev Shumsher had 12 sons and 3 daughters. His principal wife was Badamaharani Karma Kumari, Maharani Krishna Kumari (daughter of the King Surendra, in fact, Dev Shamsher was the only amongst the 17 Shamsher brothers to marry a princess from the royal family of Nepal) and Rani Ganesh Kumari.
Major Achievement Of Dev Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana
Dev Shumsher was  known as a reformist. He wanted to abolish slavery. He started building schools to introduce universal education and launched many social welfare schemes, apart from being a firm anti-corruptionist. He introduced gambling, bhajans and silent movies in his less than five-month rule. He also made improvements to the arsenal at Nakkhu (south of Kathmandu). A democratic person, he took the advice of his nephew General Gehendra Shumsher and decided to establish a parliament and built a big hall in his Thapathali Durbar like his uncle, Prime Minister and Chief of the Army (Marshal) Jung Bahadur.
He proposed a system of universal public primary education, using Nepali as the language of instruction, and opening Durbar High School to children who were not members of the Rana clan. He organized a ladies court like his late uncle Jung Bahadur. He was the first person to introduce the newspaper to Nepal, Gorkhapatra, which is still the national daily. He saw Japan as his model. He chose an advanced Asian nation for learning probably because of some similarities between Nepal and Japan rejoining their cultural and then political situation. It was Dev Shumsher who planned to send Nepali youths to Japan for higher studies.
This all-encompassing, accommodating disposition of the exiled prime minister is perhaps reflected in the curation of the exhibition too. In his fifties, he had a stroke and wrote to his brother to grant him the wish to visit Nepal once before he dies. His brother wrote back saying, "Just as no forest can contain two tigers, no one scabbard two swords, so there is no place in Nepal for you and me."
Cause of Death
Dev Shamsher ruled for two months in 1901 and was the shortest serving Rana was, he was deposed by his brothers because of his open display of guilt for what has happened during the coup. Dev Shumsher was forced into exile in British India. Upon his arrival, he was given two options: a place in Delhi or Mussoorie. Dev Shumsher chose the latter as the rolling mountain scenery most closely resembled the home he left behind. There he built a palace again, the famous Fairlawn, and began a new chapter with his twelve sons, four daughters and an array of concubines or talimas. Dev Shumsher Rana died " a mysterious death by his own gun" shortly thereafter on February 20, 1914.
